I am sure that you have noticed that negativity breeds deeper negativity. If you wake up in a bad mood, grumble, and snap at your loved ones, in turn they leave feeling a notch worse and may continue that trend through the rest of their day. I understand that some view this from a different angle claiming that everyone has full control of what he or she thinks, feels and does and that someone else’s actions don’t affect those in control. I don’t come from that line of thinking. If you surround yourself by happy, bright and positive people, it becomes second nature to follow in their footsteps and behavior. So maybe you are thinking, but I don’t work with happy, positive people. How am I supposed to benefit from a positive work environment when it is so bleak and generally negative?
Here is your challenge for the day: Be the trendsetter!
How do you do this? Shine your inner light! Dig deep and think of all the things that make you happy. Are you sipping on a cup of freshly brewed coffee? Be thankful! Smile at your coworker when they arrive. Having a hard time being cheery in the morning? Think of your last vacation. Think of your favorite reading nook and imagine yourself there. Write down 5 things that make you happy and stick it on your monitor. We have all heard the saying – fake it until you make it. It holds true here as well. At first, it may feel forced, even false to your inner being. Just trust the process. When you make the conscious effort to shine your light and show your better self, it becomes a learned behavior and you don’t have to try so hard. Your co-workers will begin to notice this shift and with time, you will start to benefit and glow from their light as well.
Give this a go and let me know one thing that surprised you from the experiment. Feeling extra generous? Shine your light by sharing this post with someone that you feel deserves a pick me up. Both of us will thank you. ♥
